Abstract

Deception is depicted in movies due to the popularity it gains from the audience, hence, influencing movie makers’ choice of topics. It is reflected in movies where heroes fabricate, alter, or withhold information. Thus, this study analyzes con artists’ verbal and bodily cues in the American movie Now You See Me and the Egyptian thriller movie Keda Reda. To depict deception, the movies are analyzed through the framework of Buller and Burgoon’s (1996) Interpersonal Deception Theory (IDP). Qualitative and quantitative methodologies are applied in analyzing selected scenes from the two movies. The quantitative analysis is applied using LIWC when analyzing verbal cues to deception in both the American and Egyptian movies; the qualitative analysis is used to analyze the body language of the con artists in both movies. Their body language is analyzed through their facial cues, eye contact, head cues, body posture including their hand cues and feet cues. The results indicate that the verbal cues that the con artists used in both movies are characterized with decreased self-reference and increased cognitive load. However, the total affect used in the American movie is a positive one as compared to a negative tone in the Egyptian movie. Moreover, con artists in both movies leak signs of deception through their body language with facial expressions and eye contact as the most leaking bodily cues followed by body posture and hand cues. Thus, this study provides data that could be used in developing an automated tool for the Arabic studies detecting deception in addition to being a guide to psychotherapists, interviewers and anyone working in communication.
