Abstract

Spermine at 100 μM was the most effective PA on senescence retardation in comparison with control and other treatments. Maximum growth characteristics, retardation in chlorophyll pigments degradation, increase in protein content, accumulation of soluble sugars and starch content, decrease in the content of ROS and increase in antioxidant enzyme activities were recorded due to exogenous Spm application; resulting in delaying both natural and drought induced leaf senescence in wheat plant.
Most of the assayed wheat SAGs were up-regulated in drought stressed plants compared to the well-watered ones, suggesting that drought stress actually triggered the leaf senescence. Foliar spray with Spm decreased the expression levels of SAG12 and SAG13 but increased the expression of SAG7 and maintained higher expression levels of RbcL in both control and drought stressed plants sprayed with Spm till late senescence phase.
