Abstract

- This work aims to survey the available species of Malvaceae (wild and cultivated) in Egypt.
- Malvaceae species were detected through twenty five visits were conducted to different habitats during the period from March 2017 to September 2018, in addition to the investigation of the herbarium specimens in the major herbaria in Egypt (CAIM and CAI).
- There were 257 specimens collected during these visits and prepared as herbarium specimens deposited in CAIM.
- Through the investigation of 530 herbarium specimens, the vegetation, flowers, fruits and seeds characters were detected and measured. The scientific names of ten herbarium specimens were corrected.
- The study revealed 49 taxa belong to 14 genera of Malvaceae (wild and cultivated) in four tribes.
- Descriptions of the studied species were mainly depended on the investigation of the herbarium specimens and fresh materials which collected, in addition to various literatures. Valid names of all taxa with their citations and synonyms were updated.
- Identification keys for tribes, genera and species are constructed.
- Four wild species are recorded in the present study not recorded in the previous literature about Malvaceae in the flora of Egypt.
- There are ten wild species excluded from this study, these species were recorded in the literatures of Egyptian Flora with no certainty or documented herbarium specimens.
- Eleven taxa were updated with the new accepted names instead of its old scientific names in the previous literatures of Egyptian Flora or the investigated herbarium specimens.
- The phytogeographical regions of wild species of Malvaceae are provided. The majority of wild species occur in Nile region (17 species) followed by Sinai region (14 species). The wild Pavonia spp. were recorded only in Gebel Elba region.
- The numerical analysis for the genus Hibiscus (the largest and polymorphic genus of the family) was conducted by using thirty six morphological characters to found the relationship between its species using UPGMA (Unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean)
- The UPGMA dendrogram of the genus Hibiscus clearly discriminated 11 species producing two main clusters at the level 25 of average taxonomic distance.
- Hibiscus schizopetalus was found to be closely related to Hibiscus rosa-sinensis in dendrogram tree, which showed the maximum similarity value (0.83). H. sabdariffa and H. cannabinus showed similarity value (0.57).
- The study revealed that the morphological characters and identification keys, as classical taxonomy, are still important in the taxonomical revisions. In addition numerical analysis is required to clarify the taxonomic relationships between species.
