The play, Mukaddes Emanet (The Holy Escrow), demonstrates the intellectual and ideological struggle between the East and the West. Naguib Fadel says, “The struggle between Islam and the West is as old as the Islamic call. When Islam succeeded in eliminating Greece and ancient Rome, and when the East wanted perfection to prevail the world, it fell into the trap of the West’s materialistic power. Hence, emerged the two distant worlds of East and West. Some believe that the strength of a state is defined by the size of its army and weaponry. However, the truth is that the strength of a state is measured in terms of internal cohesion, preservation of identity and roots, and prevention of intellectual and ideological corruption from sneaking in and destroying it from inside. The East found itself imprisoned within the limits created by the West. Besides the West’s greed for the riches of the East and fighting Islam with armies and weapons, the religious feeling in the West no longer engages in intellectually arguments with Islam, but rather views Islam lightly.”
The struggle between the Islamic civilization and the Western civilization is over identity in the first place. This is because a nation can endure defeat in many battles, but as long as it maintains its identity, it preserves its freewill. On the other hand, if it loses its identity, it surrenders and may face its end. Naguib Fadel stressed that implementing Islam in our life once again is the best way to retrieve the Islamic civilization model that we have lost.
The research covers the main aspects of “The Holy Escrow”, identifying the substantial transformations and changes witnessed by Turkey in the 19th and 20th centuries, adapted by Turkish writer, Naguib Fadel, in the form of a play, “The Holy Escrow”, in 1976. The play covers portions of the lives of three different generations, covering the period from the fall of the Ottoman Empire to 1970.
