Abstract
This dissertation proposes the following points: It would be more cost effective to customers if the generator set brand dealer could manufacture damaged alternators for obsolete alternators himself than use replacements from the original manufacturer that costs more and require modifications on the generator set. Having set up the factory, it would be more beneficial for the original brand dealer to only use engines from the original manufacturer and add his locally manufactured alternators so as to lower the overall prices of generator sets and also be more in control of delivery times. • Since the original brand dealer is having his own products and R&D department, he would benefit from having his own manufacturing facility and thus be able to produce more of the alternators that he requires for his own generator set products. • Since other products such as transformers have similar manufacturing techniques and use same material as AC alternators, the dealer could add more products to his portfolio. Having the dealer manufacture his own alternators means the dealer will be able to respond more faster to customers who have damaged generator sets and thus lower their down time and save them money having to either purchase two generator sets each time so one can act as standby to the other or rent a generator set until the damaged one is repaired. • Having the dealer manufacture alternators locally will help in the advancement of the country’s industrial sector. • Note that costing was made not taking into consideration the capital for startup only the cost of material. • It is recommended that a study be carried out on the feasibility of setting up the factory and what would be the recommended factory properties like material handling, production line shape, automation of the production…etc.
