Summary of the Study
Introduction:
Human conception to his world depends upon information which he receives through senses (hearing, vision, smelling, taste, touching). any occurrence of violation in one or more of these senses results in difficulties ,and interest here based on the disability of hearing sense to do its role ,as this disability leads to several difficulties because hearing play a role in the human development as the hearing sense is to make human being able to learn language and constitutes cornerstone for the development of social behavior and make the human being able to comprehend his environment and acknowledge risks existent in it that stimulate him to avoid it.
where indicated (Gremp,2011,p.173) that global statistics indicate a rapid increase in the prevalence rates of hearing impairment, she noted that about 278 million people are hearing impairment and at least two thirds of them in developing countries, in the United States approximately (1.3) per 1000 children Suffer from hearing impairment or hearing loss.
In developing countries, we find that the percentage (10%) of children in school age without have hearing problems, and (4) in (1000) were born and have hearing loss.
(Said Abdel Hamid, 2011, p. 56)
Lack of language and delayed language development is one of the most serious consequences of hearing impairment at all, and graduation is linked to understanding of the language, its output and clarity of the speech are associated with the degree of hearing loss, and children with hearing impairment suffer from linguistic problems of varying degrees, such as hearing low voices, and understanding what’s going on around them from discussions, and the problems of the decreasing number of
Vocabulary and difficulties of language expression.
(Abdel muttalib., el Qarati, 2005, p. 320-321)
The hearing unit at Ain Shams University revealed on the results of one of the studies in which there were (67) children out of every 10,000 Egyptian children suffering from hearing loss, including 30% of the traditional hearing aids and needing cochlear implants.
(Hamid, Shoukry, &Shehata, 2010.p.15)
(Wechsler-kashi, Schwartz, & Cleary, 2014) that the lack of experience auditory and linguistic expertise in Children with Cochlear Implants leads to the impoverishment of the Vocabulary and the inability to regulate the language in the sense of linking between the semantic aspect, or the linguistic meaning.
The Children with Cochlear Implants are characterized by blurred speech and the inability to understand the spoken language used by the listening children, which negatively affects their interactions and conversations
about, and this leads to misunderstanding between them and the listeners.
(Ibertsson, hansson, Maki-torkko, et al, 2008, p.320)
Indicated Both (Rinaldi, Caselli, 2014) that after cochlear implants, deaf children were more widely used to the spoken language than sign languages to used only if they were unable to summon the words required for dialogue.
when language was improved to hearing impaired child , he shall be able to well use his hearing remains and his mental abilities ,and understand what see around socially and academically.
( Westwood ,2008,p. 500)
Hence, the importance of carrying out this study is indicated, in view of the increase in the numbers of hearing impaired persons with Cochlear Implants. especially those who suffer from the Vocabulary, and which is an indicator of the size of the problem in the Society, and considering that the verb tonal method is one of methods used in early intervention programs , that contribute in training of children with hearing impairment and children with Cochlear Implants in the development of their different language skills and to pronounce as well as evaluation, in addition and prepare them to the primary educational stages from one side, and from another side considering it one of methods based on modern attitudes in education and learning of the hearing impaired and deaf ones, which help them merge in the society , and supporting them academically to continue their higher education later as explained earlier studies.
Study Problem:
in the context of the ”researcher” work as communication specialist and his dealing with several classes of language and speech disorders including classes of (cochlear implants) and his existence in clinics and communication rehabilitation centers and the researcher interest in special education field, particularly language and speech disorders that face normal children and children with special needs generally , and children with Cochlear Implants particularly, he observed that many children suffer from several problems in the Vocabulary and articulation disorders appearing to many of them through their communication with each other and with the healthy children.
Researcher conducted a questionnaire study aimed to retail reality and investigates realities closely to know the most important sides the children with Cochlear Implants and their mothers. This study concluded some indicators that assure this class suffers lack of linguistic attainment and lack of communication with society and understands what surround them of discussions and misfit, and from here the study problem was determined.
In his study of this problem, the researcher responded by trying to answer
the main research question through the analysis of the literary heritage
which is as follows:
To what extent can improve Vocabulary and Phonetic Alphabet Speech of the Children with Cochlear Implants using the exercises on the verb-tonal method program?
from this question the president derives the following sub-questions:
1- The extent to which there are a statistically significant differences between the average of the marks of the experimental group children of Children with Cochlear Implants, before and after the application on the Vocabulary test in favor of the post test?
2- The extent to which there are a statistically significant differences between the average of the marks of the controlling group children of Children with Cochlear Implants, before and after the application on the Vocabulary test?
3- The extent to which there are a statistically significant differences between the average of the marks of the two groups (experimental and controlling) for children of Children with Cochlear Implants in the post-scale of the Vocabulary test in favor of the experimental group?
4- The extent to which there are a statistically significant differences between the average of the marks of the experimental group children of Children with Cochlear Implants, in the two post – test and tracking scales after (two months) on the Vocabulary test?
5- The extent to which there are a statistically significant differences between the average of the marks of the experimental group children of Children with Cochlear Implants, before and after the application on the Phonetic Alphabet Speech test in favor of the post test?
6- The extent to which there are a statistically significant differences between the average of the marks of the controlling group children of Children with Cochlear Implants, before and after the application on the Phonetic Alphabet Speech test?
7- The extent to which there are a statistically significant differences between the average of the marks of the two groups (experimental and controlling) for children of Children with Cochlear Implants in the post-scale of the Phonetic Alphabet Speech test in favor of the experimental group?
8- The extent to which there are a statistically significant differences between the average of the marks of the experimental group children of Children with Cochlear Implants, in the two post – test and tracking scales after (two months) on the Phonetic Alphabet Speech test?
Study Goal:
The current study aims to improve Vocabulary and Phonetic Alphabet
Speech of the Children with Cochlear Implants using the exercises on the verb-tonal method program.
Importance of the study:
The importance of the current study is due to considerations related to the recent trends in the auditory-verbal rehabilitation of deaf Children with Cochlear Implants, due to the continuous increase in the numbers of deaf children, as well as helping the deaf to an independent and dignified life, in order to achieve effective participation in Of society, the importance of the current study can be summarized at both theoretical and applied levels as follows:
A. Theoretical importance:
1-Many research and studies emphasize the effectiveness of early intervention programs as they provide children in early childhood, whether children with special needs or ordinary children, with psychological and physical protection, where growth research indicates that the rate of learning is faster in early childhood.
2-Overcoming the barrier to language caused by hearing impairment can undoubtedly contribute to the development of other aspects affected
by the delay in language development.
B. Practical importance:
1- The Increase in the numbers of those suffering from the lack of language and articulation disorders of the children of cochlear implants, and their need for rehabilitation programs to rehabilitate them after planting the complete cochlear coverage.
2-Diagnosis of the Vocabulary through the Vocabulary test, as well as Phonetic Alphabet Speech test in children the study of Codified Tests to Measure Language Skills receptive language and expressive language and the Phonetic Alphabet Speech test in hearing-impaired children from users of the Cochlear Implants.
3-The results of this study, on the efficacy of the therapeutic program in the treatment of delayed language growth and improving the Vocabulary and the Phonetic Alphabet Speech, will help to increase the level of linguistic communication and improve mental health which will reflect on them good communication with those around them, where the benefit where the matter is not allowed to benefit in the field of language rehabilitation of this group.
4-The participation of parents in the implementation of the therapeutic program for children with a delay in the outcome of linguistic growth as much as possible, which has a positive effect in accelerating treatment, and the dissemination and continuation of the positive impact of the program through the homework of the objectives of the training program.
Study Terms:
- Children cochlear implants:
(Ibrahim al-Zarqat, 2009) points out that they are these young children who
have a very severe hearing loss, and do not benefit from the usual medical earphones, and can benefit from cochlear implants.
Cochlear Implants:-
It is the implantation of a small electronic device in the hearing member (Kurti) inside the inner cochlea to convey the acoustic signals directly to the hearing nerve and from it to the brain.
(Untestein, 2010, p.87)
-Cochlear Implants:
It is a surgical procedure carried out under the influence of the drug to cultivate an electronic device that provides a sound sensation to a person who suffers from deep deafness or a severe hearing loss, the cochlea bypass damaged sensory cells and converts speech and environmental sounds to electrical impulses and send electrical and send these Pulses of auditory nerve.
(Weisi, Rezal, Rashedi, et al ,2013,p.317)
-Phonetic Alphabet Speech:
(Abdul-Aziz al-Sartawee and Wael Abu Judah, 2000), knew the articulation of ”the process by which the sounds of the articulation device are formed according to where, how they are formed and how they are perceived, so that they appear in the image form of certain symbols according to agreed rules in the culture in which originated the individual.
-Vocabulary:
Known by (Nash, &Donaldson, 2005)as the ability to develop the language vocabulary used by the learner and the ability to derive and use some verbs correctly, and to develop the articulation skills of the learner in a proper manner.
The sum of the vocabulary represents the total number of awalmfrdat words that the child knows and uses before learning to read and write and the language results are divided into two parts:
The understandable vocabulary (receptive side) is the total number of words that the child understands when it is spoken and reveals its understanding in any way.
The spoken vocabulary (expressive side) is the total number of words
spoken by the child and actually used in his speech in different situations.
(Nash, & Donaldson, 2005, p.111)
-Training Program:
It is a set of training procedures based on the method of verb-tonal with the aim of improving the vocabulary and improving the Phonetic Alphabet Speech, with the aim of increasing those skills in order to
develop the skills of language use.
: -Verb Tonal – Method
Both of the said: The Egyptian Association for the Rehabilitation and
training of deaf and hard of hearing, and (Guberina, 1972), and then adopted by many researchers as: one of the modern methods of educating a child with hearing impaired, whatever the degree of loss of hearing with the aim of integrating it into society, this method includes a range of training It is provided to the child using threaded tones by acoustic vibrations, Musical rhythm, physical movements, and the delivery of these tones according to the auditory spectrum of the child, Using a Special device called Sauvage.
(Egyptian Association for Rehabilitation and Training of deaf and hearing Impaired, 2004, p. 2-3)
Guberina, 1972. P. 256 – 260))
-Study Tool:
The results of the current study are determined by a set of determinants and are the following determinants:-
1- Study questions: it has already been referred to.
-2-Study Method:
The results of any study are determined in the light of the quality of the methods used, and the researcher in this study relied on the experimental approach, where the training of the method of verb-tonal is the independent variant, and the effectiveness of this program in improving the vocabulary and Phonetic Alphabet Speech as The dependent variable and we’ll explain it later.
3-Human determinants:
The sample is a basic determinant of the results of any study, and this study is based on a sample of children who are cochlear implants, and who are attending medical and rehabilitation centers.
-Sample of the Study is divided into:
Diagnosis of main sample: (n= 30) from children with Cochlear Implants (females- males) their ages range from between (3-5) years, from Dr. Kamal Shoukry Center for children with special needs in Dokki and the Egyptian Association for Rehabilitation and Training of deaf and hearing Impaired, and the researcher relied on this sample to check the psychometric properties of the tests.
-Sample program:(n = 12) of children cochlear implants were divided into
two groups as follows:
-Experimental group: included (6) of Children Cochlear implants
(females - males), which were aged between 3 and 5 years, the group that received the program.
- controlling group included (6) of Children Cochlear implants (females - males), which were aged between 3 and 5 years, the group that did not
receive the program.
4- Spatial determinants of study:
It is intended to be the geographical framework from which the sample was taken and the program was applied, and the children’s sample was selected by Dr. Kamal Shoukry center for children with special needs in Dokki, and the Egyptian Society for hearing impairment.
5-Study Time parameters:
It is intended to be the time period for the application of diagnostic and therapeutic tools, which took the period of therapeutic intervention (two months and three weeks), as well as to measure the long-term impact of the treatment program.
6- Articles of the Study:
The tools are also one of the main determinants of the results of any study, and the study was adopted on Diagnostic tools for measuring the impact of variables (verb-tonal, vocabulary, improved Phonetic Alphabet Speech) are as follows:
- Preliminary data form for cochlear implant children (researcher preparation).
- Standard of family social, cultural, and economic level (prepared by Abdulaziz Alshakhs, 2014)
- Phonetic Alphabet Speech test for cochlear implant children (researcher preparation).
-Vocabulary test for cochlear implant children (researcher preparation).
- Training program based on the method of verb-tonal with children cochlear implants (researcher preparation).
7-Consensus Methods:-
It is non- parametric methods, this through using of (Cronbach Alpha),
(Test - Re Test Reliability), (Pearson Correlation Coeficient), (Mann – Whitney Test) and (Wilcoxon Signed Rank Text).
-Results of the study:
1- There are statistically significant differences between the average of the marks of the experimental group children of Children with Cochlear Implants, before and after the application on the Vocabulary
Test in favor of the post test.
2-There are no statistically significant differences between the averages of the marks of the controlling group children of Children with Cochlear
Implants, before and after the application on the Vocabulary test.
3-There are a statistically significant differences between the average of
the marks of the two groups (experimental and controlling) for children of Children with Cochlear Implants in the post-scale of the Vocabulary test in favor of the experimental group.
4-There are no statistically significant differences between the average of
the marks of the experimental group children of Children with Cochlear Implants, in the two post – test and tracking scales after (two months) on the Vocabulary test.
5-There are a statistically significant differences between the average of the marks of the experimental group children of Children with Cochlear Implants, before and after the application on the Phonetic Alphabet Speech test in favor of the post test.
6-There are no statistically significant differences between the average of the marks of the controlling group children of Children with Cochlear Implants, before and after the application on the Phonetic Alphabet Speech test.
7-There are a statistically significant differences between the average of the marks of the two groups (experimental and controlling) for children of Children with Cochlear Implants in the post-scale of the Phonetic Alphabet Speech test in favor of the experimental group.
8-There are no statistically significant differences between the average of the marks of the experimental group children of Children with Cochlear Implants,in the two post – test and tracking scales after (two months) on the Phonetic Alphabet Speech test.
The results of this study indicate that:the Training program based on using the method of (verb – tonal) was effective in improve the Vocabulary and Phonetic Alphabet Speech of the Children with Cochlear Implants.
