Abstract

Psychiatric nursing is regarded as one of the most stressful occupations in the world Nurses working with psychiatric patients may be confronted with intense interpersonal interactions, emotional liability and psychological distress that can be very stressful and challenging
Nurses working under stressful conditions are not able to appropriately fulfill their duties Thus, early recognition and effective intervention of stress related to the workplace will increase the ability of persons for controlling challenges among nurses and improve the negative effect s of job stress.
Emotional intelligence is a fundamental factor in obtaining success in personal and professional life, which plays a key role in showing appropriate reaction toward work-related stress and reducing the conflicts, Nurses with high emotional intelligence would understand and control their own emotions and other’s to adapt to environmental changes, which would decrease job stress and positively effect on the productivity of the workplace and performance.
So, there was meaningful relationship between emotional intelligence and with nurse’s job stress among nurses working in mental hospital for maintaining their psychological well-being, and helping them to deal positively with their stressors, and achieving their role.
The aim of this study was:
Assess the relationship between Emotional intelligence and Job stress among nurses in El-Abbassia mental Hospital.
The aim of this study has been achieved through answering the following research questions:
1-What is the level of emotional intelligence among nurses in El- Abbassia Mental Hospital?
2-What are the job stressors and level of stress among nurses in El- Abbassia Mental Hospital?
3-What are relationship between emotional intelligence and job stress among nurses in El- Abbassia Mental Hospital?
The study was portrayed under four main designs as the following:
A-Research Design
A descriptive correlational design has been utilized in this study.
B-Research Setting: -
The study was conducted at The El-Abbassia Mental Hospital located in Cairo.
C-Subjects of the study: -
The subjects of this study included 220 psychiatric / mental health nurses working in the previously mentioned setting working in morning and afternoon shift who were available at the time of study, fulfilling the following.
Inclusion criteria:
 Age: 20 – ≤ 30 years.
 Sex: both sexes (male and female).
 Qualifications: Diploma of nursing school & diploma of technical nursing institute
 Years of experience: working for at least one year.
 Free from any medical disorders.
Exclusion criteria:
 Nurses have administrative work
D-Tools of data collection: -
Tools used for data collection were the following:
4- Socio Demographic Sheet.
5- Emotional Intelligence Scale.
6- Psychiatric Nurses Job Stress Scale (PNJSS).
1- Socio Demographic sheet “Appendix I”
It was designed by the researcher, to the assess socio demographic data of nurses it was includes data regarding to sex, age, marital status, residence , income, qualifications and years of experience.
2- Emotional intelligence scale “Appendix II”:
It was originally developed by (Schutte, 1998) and adapted by the researcher for assessing general emotional intelligence The scale consists of (30) items which have six main different categories which involve assessment of own emotions (6 items), assessment of others’ emotions (6 items), regulation of emotions (5 items), social skills (5 items),utilization of emotions (6 items) and Optimism (4 items).
Scoring System
Each item was rated on three point Likert scale ranged from 1 to 3 as the following (the answer “Disagree” =1, the answer ”Neutral” =2, the answer ” Agree”=3 Reverse score for7, 8, 29 items, Each subtest is graded and then added together to give total score. Score can range from 30-90 with highest scale indicate the high characteristics of emotional intelligence.
Emotional intelligence level Score
Low level of emotional intelligence (30 < 68) less than 75%
High level of emotional intelligence (68 ≤ 90) More than 75%
3- Psychiatric Nurses Job Stress Scale “Appendix III”: It was originally developed by (Yada, 2011), and adapted by the researcher to assess stressor facing nurses in abbassia mental hospital. it containing 39 items, divided into seven factors which involve Psychiatric Nursing Abilities (7 items), Attitude of nurses toward Patients (7 items), Attitude of nurses toward Nursing (6 items), Communication skills (6 items), work load (3 items), Physical environment (4 items) and Lack of support( 6 items).
Scoring System:
Each item can be answered on three-point Likert scale, from 1to3 as the following (the answer ’never’ =1, the answer ’sometimes’ =2, the answer ’always’=3). Each subtest is graded and then added together to give total score. Score can range from 39 -117 classified as following:

Mild <39
Moderate 39<78
Severe 78≤117
Results:
The main finding of this study revealed that:
1. More than two third of nurses were married and male nurses in age group25-30 years old, regarding to qualifications the majority of them (52. 7%) were graduated from nursing Technical Institute and (44%) near to half of the sample had experience more than 10years.
2. As regard with the Appraisal Of Own Emotion (72. 7%) of the nurses agreed that when they faced obstacles, they remembered times faced similar obstacles and overcame them, meanwhile regarding to the Appraisal Of Other Emotion the most of nurses agreed that they could tell how people are feeling by listening to the tone of their voices and could recognize the emotions people are experienced, by looking at their facial expressions (64. 1%) & (59. 1%) respectively.
3. As regards Regulation Of Own Emotions , the highest percentage of nurses (78. 6%) were agreed that Some of the major events of life had led to re-evaluate what is important and not important but concerning with Social Skills the majority of nurses (79. 5%) were agreed on compliment others when they had done something well.
4. Concerning to Utilization Of Emotion, more than three quarter of nurses (80. 9%) agreed that when they were in a positive mood, solving problems was easy regarding and about Optimism the majority of nurses(85. 9%) agreed that emotions are one of the things that make life worth living.
5. Concerning to level of emotional intelligence the most of nurses (75. 9%) had a high level of emotional intelligence
6. There was a significant relation between nurses’ emotional intelligence and their sex, qualifications and experience.
7. As regard to the Psychiatric Nursing Ability the majority of nurses (89. 1) always thought that they could nurse and correspond as the case required and (88. 2) thought that experience had been made use of on the job, concerning with the Attitude of nurses toward Patients The most of nurses (72. 3) always think that they had role in improving in patients’ behavior.
8. As regard to Attitude of nurses Toward Nursing that about three quarter of nurses (73. 2) always thought that they could do integrated nursing. As concerns about Communication Skills the most of nurses (66. 4) thought they had difficulty communicating with medical team.
9. Concerning to Work Load (48. 2) of nurses always had stress from many non-nursing tasks required, about physical environment (69. 1) of them suffered from improper security services in the hospital and Finally (72. 3) always suffer from poor salary in regard to the lack of staff support sub item.
10. Regarding the total score of the component of job stress among nurses, the highest percentage of nurses (72. 7%) had a psychiatric nursing ability toward psychiatric patients and three fifths of the nurses had a moderate level of job stress with a statistically significant difference between El-Abbassia Mental Health nurses’ job stress and their sex, experience and qualifications.
11. Finally the result of current study found that there was a negative correlation between emotional intelligence and job stress.
Conclusion:
Based on the results of the current study, it was concluded that:
1. Regarding to emotional intelligence, the highest percentage of the studied sample were able to make appraisal and regulation of own emotions, and three quarter of them had a high level of emotional intelligence with a significant difference between the level of emotional intelligence and their sex, income, professional experience and qualifications.
2. Concerning job stress the highest percentage of the studied sample had the ability to provide psychiatric nursing toward psychiatric patients and most of them suffered from moderate level of job stress with a significant difference between the level of job stress and their sex, , experience and qualifications,
3. Finally there was a negative relationship between emotional intelligence and job stress.
Recommendations:
Based upon the results of the current study, the following recommendations were suggested:
Clinically:
 Establish a psycho-educational program for psychiatric nurses to learn them how to cope positively with their job stressors
 Conduct intervention program concerning emotional intelligence among newly graduated nurses in order to managing their stress and improving job performance.
Research:
 Conduct studies about relationship between emotional intelligence and stress management for psychiatric nurses.
Education:
 Adding emotional intelligence on curricula of nursing students to enhance mange stress to different situations in live and job.
