Abstract

Self-ligating appliance systems have become quite popular in recent years with several manufacturers developing their own products, among which is Ormco who developed the Damon System which is the most popular.
Investigation of the various types of tooth movement is of great concern to orthodontists worldwide. One of the most recent and value aids now a viable at hand to orthodontists is the CBCT. CBCT gives vast, reliable, and accurate information regarding tooth movement. This led us to clinically evaluate the position of the anterior teeth and transverse dimensional changes associated with the use of Damon Q brackets in a prospective randomized clinical study.
In addition to the main aim, this study was also sought to assess and evaluate the soft tissue and skeletal vertical dimensional changes.
The sample of this study consisted of 12 subjects (age 14-18 years with a mean age of 16±2) each exhibiting a full permanent dentition, bilateral dental class I molar relationship, crowding of more than 5mm per arch, and absence of dental and facial anomalies.
For each subject a standard full set of orthodontic records were obtained pre and post alignment. All included subjects were treated using Damon Q brackets. The brackets were bonded by the direct technique and the following archwire sequence was used: 0.014inch Damon Copper NiTi, 0.016inch Damon Copper NiTi, 0.014×0.025inch Damon Copper NiTi, 0.018× 0.025inch Damon Copper NiTi.
Each wire was left in place for 8-10 weeks; after complete alignment; the following records were used to evaluate the results: CBCT, lateral cephalometric radiographs and extra and intra oral photos. The linear and angular measurements were performed on the obtained records. The obtained data was tabulated and statically analyzed to obtain the results.
