Abstract

LBP is defined as “pain and discomfort, localized below the costal margin and above the inferior gluteal folds, with or without referred leg pain”. (European guidelines for management of chronic nonspecific low back pain, 2005).
LBP has been declared to be an increasingly global health issue among individuals. The annual prevalence rate for LBP ranged from 30% to as high as 90%. The impact of LBP does not only affect individuals but nations also, through medical expenditures incurred as well as the reduced productivity of workers.
The aim of the study was to measure the prevalence rate of LBP, Identify risk factors associated with LBP and Assessment of nurse attitude regarding different situations causing LBP.
A cross-sectional study was designed including 250 female nurse at Ain Shams University hospitals and a self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data about Socio-demographic and individual characteristics, Occupational history, Risk factors of LBP in nurses’ work, Preventive measures, Safe patient handling training,Identification of back pain and nurses Attitude towards LBP and anthropometric measurements’ were taken.
Results in our study have shown the annual prevalence rate of 80.40%.Individual factors that showed significant relation with LBP were age, marital status and BMI. As for the occupational factors that showed significant relation to LBP were years of experience in same department, prolonged standing, number of beds and/or equipment moved and application of training for patient handling. Lack of a reporting system for incedents of LBP and lack of a clear non-lifting policy may have role in the high prevalence of LBP among nurses.
Nurses showed a high percentage score for the attitude section with a mean of 79.24 which showed that nurses have a positive attitude and knowledge towards LBP issues. Regression model showed that married/divorced, surgical departments (Obs & Gyn and surgery) and moving beds were significantly associated to LBP.
It can be concluded from the current study that LBP represents a huge burden on nurses in Ain Shams University Hospitals and that the problems does not be within the attitude of nurses rather within the working environment and the effectiveness of training course for patient handling and/or using the patient handling equipment.
Several recommendations were made about raising the awareness about the magnitude of LBP, different preventive measures as including educational programs about LBP for undergraduate , limiting number of beds and/or equipment moved and polices should be available for reporting incidents of LBP and a clear non-lifting policy.
