Abstract

The internet is rapidly becoming a significant and integral part of the daily life, especially with adolescents. Preoccupation with the Internet, use of the internet in increasing amounts of time to achieve satisfaction, unsuccessful efforts to control, internet use, risked loss of relationships, educational opportunities because of Internet use, lies to others to conceal the extent of involvement with the internet are some symptoms of high internet use. High internet has numerous effects on adolescent s live including potential physical, social, psychological consequences. Controlling the hours spent online is essential to prevent farther complications from the internet. (David, 2016)
Aim of the study
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of high internet use on health of adolescents through:
1- Assessing of physical, social & psychological health status of adolescents using internet.
2- Assessing of scholastic achievement of adolescents.
3- Assessing the pattern of internet use among adolescents.
Research questions:
1- Is there a relation between the pattern of internet use and physical health status of adolescent?
2- Is there a relation between the pattern of internet use and psychological health status of adolescent?
3- Is there a relation between the pattern of internet use and social health status of adolescent?
4- Is there a relation between the pattern of internet use and scholastic achievement of adolescent?
Subject & Methods:
Type of study:
A descriptive design will used in this study.
Setting:
The present study will be conducted in four governmental and one nongovernmental secondary schools in El Zayton educational administrator which their names are (El Kobba,Saraya el Kobba, Ensaf Serry,Talaee Gaber Elansary and Amon secondary schools).
Sampling:
- Type of sample: Multi stage.
-Technique:
In Cairo Governorate, there are (20) educational administrative districts, El Zayton educational administrator will choose because it contains the biggest number of secondary schools. It contains 10 governmental and nongovernmental secondary schools. This study will conduct in (5) Schools and they will choose by using simple systemic random method (every 2 schools).
-Size:
The sample will contain (800) students.
-Technical design:
For data collection, two tools will use:
First tool self–administered questionnaire; it will include the following parts:
Part one -It concerns with adolescent s socio-demographic characteristics such as age, sex, and parent s job, parent’s educational level, family size, and family type, percapita income.
Part two-It concerns with measuring adolescent s pattern use of internet to assess the adolescent s pattern use of internet.
Part three- It concerns with measuring social and psychological health condition of adolescent using internet.
Second tool:
Physical assessment tool: it concerns with assessing physical status of adolescents using internet.
Results:
The results of this study have shown the following:
The result of this study showed that 33.5% of adolescents in this study were aged 16 years old, 69% were males, and 30.5% were females.
According to family crowding index, 35.3% of study sample were crowded families and 80.9% were nuclear ones.
It reported from the study that 10.5% of adolescents spent more than eight hours online, 37.5% of them used the internet more than once per day, 46.5% considered chatting Sites were essential and irreplaceable, and 65% of them said that the main reason of internet use is the social media as face book and twitter.
It was found that 15.5% of study sample kept watching, when they encountered inappropriate content during searching Internet, 73.5% of study sample use the internet at home and 79% of them use internet through mobiles or tablets
The present study showed that 51% of them considered that, it was difficult to stop using the not even they felt fatigue or sleepiness, 32.5% of study sample used video call/camera and 61.5% of them used hand free during internet use, 26.5% of them visited the born sites
It was presented that 73.5% had no balance between spending time on the internet and time of family and friends, 70% used the internet to create new relationships, 41.5% Felt upset when offline, 58.5% felt that they need for increase their internet use longer to satisfy their desire and 15.6 % of them felt that, life is dull, empty and bleak without the internet.
It showed that, 28% of adolescent’s body weight increased since they used the internet, 46.5% of adolescent sleeping pattern affected because of using the internet, and 53% of them suffered from neck pain and backache after browsing the internet. In addition, this study presents that, 28.5% of them wear eyeglasses after repeated internet usage.
It also represented that 15.5% of them suffered from curvature of the spine and 15% had pain and inflammation on arm joints and 38% of adolescents suffered from blurred eye.
Conclusion:
As regard the research question of the present study, it concluded that: there were more than one tenth of adolescents had high negative physical effects, more than half of them had negative social effect and less than half of them had high negative psychological effect as result of high internet use.
There was less than one tenth of adolescents with high internet use had grade poor and more than one tenth of them had grade fair.
There were more than two thirds of adolescents, their pattern of use was moderate, and more than one tenth of them were high pattern of internet use.
There were a statistical significant relation between the pattern of internet use and the physical and psychological health status of adolescent, and there were high statistical significant relation between the pattern of internet use and social health status of adolescents and scholastic achievement of adolescent.
Recommendations:
The following recommendations inferred from the study:
1- Continuous assessment for adolescent s health status at school and at their homes is essential.
2- Conducting educational programs for students, parents about proper use of internet, limiting hours spent on the internet, proper body mechanics during internet usage.
3- Further researches may do by using longitudinal studies to determine the relationship between Internet usage and school performance.
4- Designing and disseminating pamphlets about the health hazards of high internet usage for secondary schools students and designing short programs in the mass media to increase awareness of adolescents and their parents about hazards of high internet usage.
