Muscles are capable of spontaneous healing by regeneration; however, development of fibrosis prevents complete functional recovery and affects muscle strength and extensibility.
PRP injections are used as a method of treatment to enhance healing and accelerate recovery due to its high content of growth factors. TGF- β1plays the main role in fibrous scar formation, consequently its action has to be neutralized to gain the maximum benefit of PRP therapy.
LOSARTAN which is an antihypertensive AT1 receptor blocker has a significant anti-fibrotic action by inhibiting TGF- β1 production. It is used in treatment of renal, liver and cardiac fibrotic conditions.
In this study we compared the effect of PRP injection combined with LOSARTAN oral administration to PRP injection only on skeletal muscle healing after acute injuries regarding the functional recovery and development of fibrosis.
It was concluded that PRP injection and LOSARTAN combination therapy significantly reduces the incidence of fibrous scar formation after acute skeletal muscle injuries when compared to PRP injection only; however, there was no evidence that this combination therapy has an advantage over PRP in accelerating the recovery, reducing pain scores or improving the functional outcome.
