Abstract

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia in clinical practice, it has been linked to increased risk of stroke and premature death, and it is considered a growing health problem in developed countries. The progressive and chronic nature of this disease leads to heavy utilization of health care resources. Addressing patient concerns and providing them with the knowledge to make informed choices about their condition, while time consuming, is good clinical practice and should be the goal for all health care professionals. Educating patients in self-management skills may be the solution to meeting the chronic illness needs of patients in an era of shrinking financial and human resources. The role of the cardiac nurse is to facilitate the development of knowledge and skills, so that the patient may engage in self-management practices. To educate patients systematically; their individual educational needs need to be identified. The aim of the study: The aim of the study was to assess knowledge and self-management behaviors among patients with chronic atrial fibrillation. Setting of the study: This Study was conducted at the cardiovascular outpatient clinic in the Specialized-Medical Hospital at Mansoura University. Subjects of the study : A convenient sample of 104 patients with atrial fibrillation was entered in the study.
