Abstract
This study examines the portrayal of female social outcasts in Carson McCullers’s The Heart is a lonely Hunter (1940), and The Member of the Wedding (1946). It focuses on how the writer was aware of the image of the southern female and how she fought to change this image. Through the portrayal of the females, the writer expresses her ability to overcome the female’s weakness. This thesis is divided into three chapters beside a conclusion, and a list of works cited.
