The problem and questions of the research:
There are shortage and weakness in student teachers preparation programs for student teachers in the department of
geography and social studies in the faculty of education in general and GIS and remote sensing in particular in developing
the skills of designing and using digital maps and satellite images which are based on geographical information system as
well as the thinking skills of student teachers which are reflected on the attitudes of students toward employing them
during and after the study.
In order to tackle this problem, the current research attempted to answer the following main question “ what is the effect of
a suggested program in geographical information system and remote sensing on developing designing and using digital
maps and spatial thinking skills for faculty of education geography department student?
This main question has sub other question :
1- What are the skills of designing and using digital maps based on geographical information system and
remote sensing and which are required for preparing student teachers in the department of geography,
faculty of education?
2- What are the spatial thinking skills which are based on geographical information system and remote
sensing and which are required for preparing student teachers in the department of geography, faculty
of education?
3- What is the suggested framework for a program prepared for these students in light of these skills?
4- What is the effect of the suggested program on developing these skills?
The results of the research have referred to the following:
1- There is a statistically significant difference at the level 0.01 between the mean score of
research group in the pre and post application on the multiple choice questions of the
cognitive aspect and the eight skills in favor of the post application which indicates the effect
of the proposed program.
2- There is a statistically significant difference at the level 0.01 between the mean score of research
group on the level of designing and using digital maps as well as on each sub skill separately before and
after studying the program in favor of the post application which indicates the effect of the proposed
program on developing these skills for those student.
3- There is a statistically significant difference between the mean score of research group on the spatial
thinking test for the four skills which form it as well as for each sub skill separately and this is before
and after studying the program in favor of the post application which indicates the effect of the
proposed on developing the spatial thinking skills for those students.
4- There is a statistically significant difference between the mean score of the central group students and
the experimental group students on the skills of designing and using the digital maps and spatial
thinking in favor of the post application of the experimental group students for both the multiple
choice questions and the practical test as well as the spatial thinking test.
