Managing safety in surgical suites has received increased attention in recent years. Hospital occupational safety and health officers play a significant role on , safety and quality management in such critical areas inside the hospital. The study was conducted in the surgical suites of Gamal Abdel Nasser Hospital in Alexandria. During the study period, the hospital was an 880-bed general hospital affiliated to the Health Insurance Organization. The aim of study was to identify specific hazards associated with the main activities carried out in the surgical suites of Gamal Hospital, assess hazard control and safety measures practiced in the surgical suites under study, determine the degree or compliance with regulations and legislation concerning the work place and its specific health hazards in relation to the surgical suite, and to investigate the role of occupational safety and health officers in the hospital in relation to the surgical suite. The methodology was designed to cover structure, process and outcome of surgical suite safety system in Gamal Hospital. Concerning structure, data were collected about operating suite layout and design. As regards process, observation of operating suite activities was performed for patient transport, anesthesia safety, hand washing, scrubbing’ and OR attire related activities, housekeeping and linen handling activities, sterilization, waste management, electrical equipment, anesthesia, and fire safety activities. Safety regulations and legislations of the surgical suites were evaluated. Environmental safety was assessed through performing measurements of temperature, humidity, light intensity, and noise level. Regulatio~s and legislations concerning the work place and its specific health hazards, in relation to the surgical suite was evaluated through review of safety documents and accident/illness review records. The role of occupationa} safety and health officers in the hospital, in relation to the surgical suite was also investigated through performing interviews with safety related personnel. , The study results revealed the presence of specific hazards associated with the structure in the surgical suites of Gamal Hospital. - Physical hazards were present as a result of non conductive floors, improper scrub sinks design with subsequent water spills, absence of waste gas system, inadequate lightening in scrub areas and GIT endoscopy store, and absence of a reliable fire combat system. - Biological hazards were present as a result of the use of stores and offices as dressing rooms, the use of corridors as pre and postoperative care areas, the location of the female water closet inside the clean restricted area of the main suite, and the improper location of scrub areas in main and GIT suites. - Ergonomic hazards were present as a result of absence of administration offices, control system and stores in ophthalmology and GIT endoscopy suites, presence of scrub areas inside the operating room of GIT and some operating rooms of main suite, and absence of recovery rooms in the three suites under study. - Chemical hazards were present as a result of absence of operating room waste gas scavenging system in the main suite. ~ Study results also revealed hazards associated with activities carried out in the surgical suites of Gamal Hospital. - Biological hazard were present due to improper implementation of infection control policies and procedures as revealed by the following: . Hand washing was performing by non-scrubbed members in 70 of observations in the main suite, 20 of observations in ophthalmology suite, and 0 of observation in the GIT endoscopy suite. .
