Abstract

The present work was designed to evaluate the effect of recombinant bovine somatotropin (rbST) on physical and biochemical semen characteristics and growth performance of Rahmani lambs fed different levels of dietary energy (control NE-Saline, HE-Saline and LE-Saline). Each level of dietary energy divided into two groups according to rbST treatment (100 mg rbST/14 days) to obtained six symmetric experimental groups HE-Saline, HE-rbST, LE-Saline, LE-rbST, NE-rbST and the control (NE-Saline) rams. The average daily gain (ADG) in HE-rbST was higher (P<0.05) by 8.43% than HE-Saline rams. The ADG was higher (P<0.05) in HE-Saline by 12.5 and 13.48 % than LE-Saline and the control rams, respectively. The feed conversion did not differ significantly within each level of dietary energy. The feed conversion was better (P<0.05) in HE-Saline than LE-Saline rams, but did not differ significantly compared to the control rams. The ruminal pH value was higher (P<0.05) in LE-Saline rams than HE-Saline and the control rams. The concentration of ruminal ammonia was higher (P<0.05) in HE-Saline than LE-Saline and the control rams. After 3 and 6 hrs post feeding, the concentration of total volatile fatty acids was higher (P<0.05) in HE-Saline than LE-Saline and the control rams.
