Abstract

The present investigation provides a study or the plant life in ICafi El-Sl~eieikh province including the cultivated lands and the Deltaic Mediterranean coast of this province. In the cultivated lands, seven localities (districts) have been selected for monthly records of the weeds associated with the principal crops during winter aid summer crop rotations. These localities are : ICafr El-Sheikh, Sidi- Salim, Disuq, Motobas, Bieyala, El-E-Iamool and El-Borullus. During the winter rotation, five crops have been chosen for weed records, these crops are : wheat, clover, broad bean, sugar beet and flax. While, during summer rotation four crops have been selected, these are : cotton, rice, maize and summer vegetables. Furthermore, the canal and canal bank plants have been recorded in each locality during all the year. 011 the other lland, t11e Deltaic Mediterranean coast of Kafr El-Sl~eelkh province is characterized by prominellt physiographic variations which lead to Uie distiction of four different habitat types namely : sand formations (dunes and flats), salt marshes, reed swamps and fertile non-cultivated lands. Two sites : Motobas a~d Baltim coasts have been selected to represent the wllole study coastal area for survey the natural vegetation. The present study aims at the following objectives : 1- I<ecord of tllc seasolla1 aspects and distribution of the plant lib it1 different localities of Kafr El-Sheikh province. 2- Sociological aspects of the plant life in various principal crops. 3- Survey of the nalurzl vegetation 111 the different habitat types of the Deltaic Mediterranean coast of Kafi El-Sheddl province. 4- Analysis of the flora of the study area. The present study showed that, tllc total number of weeds recorded in the cultivated lands is 187 species comprising 42 species have been recorded in seven localities, 22 species in six localities, 19 species in five localitics, 21 species 111 four localities, 20 species in three localities, 27 species in two localities aid 36 species in one locality only. Concerning, the sociological aspects of weeds in various crops and canal bank habitat, it has been found that some weeds have been recorded in crops and catla1 bank together, some weeds have been recorded in crops only and others prefer to mhabit canal banks only. These weeds showed a wide range of assemblages in various crops and they may be grouped into 3 pl~enological categories : winter weeds (cooler), sumner weeds (w’mer) and all year weeds. 011 contrary, the total n~unber of species recorded in the diEereiit habitats of the Mediterranean coastal belt of Kafr El- Sheikh provirlce is 127, these species arc distributed as follows : (a) 86 specics have bcw recorded in boll~.oUr altim and Motobas coasts including 36 perennials and 50 annuals. (b) 36 species have been recorded in Baltiin coast ody co~nprising 22 perennials and 14 a~muals. (c) 5 species have been recorded in Motobas coast only including 4 perennials and one annual.
