Abstract

Field and pots experiments were carried out at the farm of Kafr El-Sheikh, Faculty of Agriculture during the summer seasons of 1992 and 1993. The main objective of this study was to recognize the responses of olaa plant Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) balady and golden coast varieties to foliar applications of different concentrations of growth regulators: mepiquat chloride (pix), chloromequat chloride (CCC) and morphactin. The used levels of (pix) (1 00, 250 and 500 ppm); (CCC 500, 1000 and 1500 ppm) and inorphactin (1, 5, and 10 ppm) beside the control (water spr ,~y). A split-plot design wit11 three replicates was used.Varieties were allotted to the main plots where the levels of pix, CCC and morphactin were tried at the sub-plots. The area of the sub-plot was 10.5m2. Data were tested by analysis of variance Duncan’s Multiple Range Test was used for comparisons among treatments means. Growth analysis was done at 15, 30 and 45 days from spraying and the characters, i.e, stem length, number of branches, leaveslplant, leaf area (fifth leaf), number of flowers and podslplant. Plastide pigments content (chl. a., b. andcarotenoids .) in the leaves were done at 15 and 30 days from spraying. Dry weightlplant (stem, leaf and root), minerals content in the leaves and anatomical samples were done at 30 days from spraying. These results were summarized as follows : The number of branches, leaveslplant, leaf area (fifth leaf) and dry weightlplant increased in balady more than Golden coast varity. Therefore these characters led to increase the number of flowers, podslplant and early and total yieldlplant in the same variety, though balady is shorter than Golden coast variety. The middle level in the three growth regulators caused increase of dry weightlplant (stem and branches, leaves and root system) in balady variety except pix at 100 ppm whch gave the highest dry weight in both seasons. The number of flowers, podslplant and early and total yieldlplant greatly increased in balady variety by using pix at 100 ppm; CCC at 1000 ppm and morphactin at 5 pprn compared with Golden coast variety. The diameter and weightlpod were noticed increased in balady variety, when the length of pod was the tallest in Golden coast variety. The dimeter of’ pod did not affected by using all levels of the three growth regulators, while the length of pod was noticed increased with morphactin at 5 pprn in Golden coast variety. The weight of pod increased with CCC at 1000 ppm and pix at 100 ppm in balady variety. The dry weight of pod did not affected by using all levels of the three growth regulators compared with the control plants. Plastid pigments content in the leaf (chl. b and cqrotenoids) were insignificant differences in both varieties, while chl. a content, increased in balady more than Golden coast variety. The interaction between the growth regulators and varieties did not affect in pigments content in the leaf after 15 days from applications. However pix at 250 pprn and CCC at 1000 ppm increased pigments content in the leaf at the second sample date in both seasons.
