Abstract The objective of this work was - t o study the effect of milk replacer and early weanin@; on the pep formance of Friesian calves. The use of one or both of the two methods could help in saving good amount of milk f o r human consumption. Fourty eight newly born Friesian calves were divided into f o u r similar groups (12 animals of each, 6 males and 6 females) . First and second groups .(I and 11) were weaned early at 56 days of age and fed on whole milk (I) and milk replacer (11), respectively. The third and fourth groups (I11 and IV) were weaned 1 at 105 days and fed on milk replacer (111) and whole milk (control-group IV) , respectively, The results obtained in the present study could be summarized as follows: from 1-15 weeks: 1. Averages of daily gain were 0.345, 0.337, 0.453 and 0.502 kg for calves in groups I, 11, I11 and Ns respectively. For male calves, the averages were. 0.355, 0,378, 0.483 and 0.96 kg, corresponding t o 0.335, 0.2&5, 0.422 and 0.457 kg for females. The differences between type of weaning (early or late) |
