Abstract

The aim of this work is to evaluate the results of percutaneous pinning of fractures of proximal humerus as regards shoulder function, early return to ordinary job, and fracture union. In the period between June 2002 to September 2003, twenty patients with proximal humerus fracture were admitted to Mansoura Emergency Hospital. Their age ranged from 21 to 58 years with a mean age 37.8 years. The mechanism of injury was fall on outstretched hand in 12 patients and motor car accident in 8 patients. 18 patients had tow part surgical neck fracture and 2 patients had threepart greater tuberosity fracture. In addition, one patient had bilateral fracture both bone leg, one patient had fracture neck femur, and one patient had contralateral facture both bone forearm. Operative treatment was done for all the patients in the form of closed reduction and percutaneous pinning with terminally threaded pins. The results were assessed with Neer<U+2019>s scoring system (1970). There were 10 cases with excellent results, 8 cases with satisfactory results, and 2 cases with unsatisfactory results. The results were analyzed to determine the factors that may affect final outcome. The effect of age was very important as regard the final outcome and pain. Also, early start of shoulder movement and regular follow of rehabilitation program.
