Abstract

Rheumatoid arthritis is one of the commonest chronic ammatory diseases which is accompanied by considerable disability d morbidity. Cellular adhesion molecules are important in the influx of flammatory leukocytes into diseased RA synovial tissues (Koch et aI., ICAM-1 plays an important role in the activation of mmunocompetent cells. Upon stimulation with cytokines such as IL-I, ere is rapid and strong expression of ICAM-1 on lymphoid cells and on ells of non lymphoid origin, such as endothelial cells. Binding of ’ICAM-1 to the T-cell surface antigen LFA-l induces adhesion and of the corresponding lymphocytes. Intercellular and subsequent activation of the immune system constitute a key element in the pathogenesis of immunologically mediated disorders as RA (Machold et al., 1993). The aim of this work was to detect levels of sIC AM-l & IL-la. in sera of RA patients and to correlate these levels with various measures of disease activity and severity. Our study comprised 70 patients suffering from RA and all patients were selected from the outpatient clinics of Rheumatology and
