Abstract

1.The aim of this work was to estimate the total serum copper level in patients with rheumatoid artheritis and to compare it with the normal sUbj¬ects and to find out if there is any relationship between the total serum copper level and the para¬meters of disease activity in patients with rheum¬atoid artheritis • 2.22 patients with definite and classical rheumatoid artheritis comprised the material of this study. They were classified according to : a.Sex : in to : i. 5 male patients age ranged between 26-55 years ii. 17 female patients age ranged between 12-62 years • ’b. Age : i. 18 patients above the age of 30 years • ii. 3 patients below the age of 30 years • c.According to the presence or absence of sub¬cutaneous noduleS into : i. 4 patients with subcutaneous nodules. ii. 18 patients without subcutaneous nodules d. According to the duration of the disease into : i. 9 patients with duration above 3 years. ii. 8 patients with duration less than 3 years. e.According to the number of joints affected into: i. 12 patients with more than 5 joints affected ii. 10 patients with less than 5 joints affected All patients were examined clinically, laboratory and radiologically to confirm the diagnosis • Total copper concentration was determined in the blood serum from patients with R.A. and compared with those obtained from control persons. * The mean total serum copper level from patients with R.A. with out corticosteroid therapy or pregnancy was (238 1:. 104 ugm/IOO ml) were significantly higher thant-hat from control persons (114.6 1:. 18.57 ugm/ 100 ml ) significant difference was found between the total serum copper level in male patients and those from femal patients • No significant difference was found between the total serum copper level in patients above the 30 years of age and those below the age ,of 30 years •
