Abstract

Bee honey is a sweat viscous fluid produced by honey bees, Apls mellifera, from erent nectar s of flowers. The medical use and the preservative properties of they were well known since thousands of years. The present work is done to evaluate the etlicacy of honey on bacterial Junctivius and herpetic keratitis both clinically and experimental1y. Instillation of bee honey four times daily proved to be highly effective in the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis. 90.6% of 150 patients were cured completely. All the micro-organisms isolated from the conjunctival sac, infected wounds, urine and other specimens showed the greatest inhibition by honey. Honey stimulated Staphylococci to secrete pigments which would have antibacterial effect. There was no significant difference betveen the antibacterial action of treous honey and clover honey . Honey helped E-coli to flourish helping it to do its role in the synthesis of vitamin K.B I, B2 and B 12 in the intesHne. Citreous honey was used also in the treatment of 20 cases of supcrfical erpetic keratitis in man. 60%of primary herpetic keratitis healed after ten days of eatment by honey alone. 20% healed after the addition of adenine - arabinoside intment at night. Citreous honey was proved also to be an effective drug in the treatment of superficial herpetic keratitis in experimental rabbits. Citreous honey was shown to have marc antiviral effect than concentrated sugar and clover honey. The antiviral effect of cttrcous honey was comparable to BVDU (bromo-vinyl deoxyuridine) 0.1 % . Boiling of honey to 100°C for five minutes didn’t let it to loss its antiviral action.
