Abstract
In the present study 30 patients with hepatosplenic bilharziasis were selected. Theyn were 24 males and 6 females with age ranging from 16 to 56 years. Beside 13 normalpersons were thoroughly chosen as a reference group ,of them 9 were males.They had matched age and body weight with the ill group.A11 cases had been subjected to clinical examination and investigations, comprising urine and stool analysis ; complete blood picture and liver function tests especially serum albumin, bilrubin and serum glutamic Pyruvic transaminase. other tests as serum creatinine and serum calcium are also done. Measurement of fasting serum vitamin A,and carotenes and their estimation after an oral maximal dose of vitamin A 350.000 I.U.was carried out. D-xylose urinary excretion test was also done after giving an oral dose 5 grams D-xylose.Comparison of vitamin A and carotenes parameters of the patients to reference group was done .It was found that serum vitamin A values and the percentage of increase in serum vitamin A after giving a loading does of the vitamin and also carotenes values were significantly low in the patients than that of the reference group.
