Abstract

The present study was conducted during the two successive seasons of (2001 and 2002) at the nursery of Horticulture Research Station, Mansoura Dakahlia governorate to evaluate the effect of five rootstocks Namely: Salt Creek, StGoerge, ARG1, Harmony (American stocks) and Roumi Red cv. (European grape) on the success percentage of grafts (takes), vegetative growth, as well as, leaf minerals content of the grafted scion, (Thompson Seedless) cv. (Vitis Vinifera , L.) . This study revealed the following important results: (1) The highest percentage of takes was attained with Romi Red stock ; (66.50 and 67.70 %), followed by ARG1 and Harmony stocks which gave intermediate values of success (54.08 and 55.62 %), while, the lowest ones were observed in the Salt Creek stock (34.08 and 40.67 %) in descending order the first and second seasons of the study, respectively. (2) Significant differences among the annual length of transplants were observed, where Thompson Seedless / ARGI, Thompson Seedless / Romi Red (Vinifera, stock) and Thompson Seedless / Salt Creek with values: 79.8, 68.0 and 64.2 cms of the shoot length, respectively. These differences may be attributed to the stock vigor and activity as compared to the other tested rootstocks . (3) Average shoot diameter of Thompson Seedless scion on ARG1 and on Romi Red stocks were attained the highest values; and reached to 72 mm and 64 mm, respectively. The same trend concerning shoot length was also noticed in this concern . (4) In connection, the average number of leaves per each transplant generally declare supermacy of Thompson Seedless scion grafted on both Romi Red and ARGI stocks in both seasons of the study, reached to 32.1 and 33.5 leaf per transplant. The lowest ones were found in Harmony and St.Goerge with an average of 30.6 and 29.0 leaf per transplant ( average of both seasons). (5) Leaf area of Thompson Seedless scion grafted onto different stocks were ranged between 125.19 to 96.36 cm2 of the 7th leaf on each shoot, as a criteria of vegetative growth, the largest area was observed with Salt Creek and ARGI stocks, since their area of leaf were 125.19 and 123.68 cm2 respectively. (6) Thompson Seedless cv. on ARG1 stock had the highest values of both fresh weight and dry weight of their shoots among the other stocks investigated, where on St.Goerge and Harmony gave the lowest values in this concern . (7) ARG1 rootstock was attained the highest values concerning number of roots per transplant ,therefore its root ramification and denesity were larger than the other worked stocks. In addition, average root diameter showed the same direction with ARG1 stock as compared with other worked rootstocks. (8) Both fresh and dry weight of ARGI roots were higher than the other worked rootstocks, where attained 12.2 to 7.15 g fresh and dry weight as a mean values of both seasons of the study. However, Salt Creek was the lowest values concerning fresh and dry weight of formed roots . (9) The most of the worked rootstocks safely and increased N, P and K to the optimum concentration of N, P and K in the leaf petiole of grafts, where N % was in between 1.05 2.23%, P % was in between 0.13 0.74 % and K % was in between 1.74 3.12 % for both values of minimum and maximum concentrations .
