Abstract

Urban morphology is the study of city as human habitat, examines the urban context of a city and its different typologies in current conditions and compares it through time and expansion of urban fabric. Moreover, urban morphology refers to the study of urban form that focuses on the formation and transformation of urban forms of cities, towns, and villages over time; their spatial patterns at different scales; and physical characteristics to inform appropriate urban interventions to promote sustainable urban development. Each city fabric has unique physical genes in its patterns of urban blocks and streets according to the history of expansion and the incidents that resulted any change in the fabric. On the other hand, among adjacent cities, urban morphology has various effects on physical and social aspects in addition to other aspects such as environmental and economic aspects. To understand the mutual effects of urban morphology among adjacent cities, this research tackles the case study of the capital of Egypt which is Cairo and its relation of adjacency to New Cairo in the eastern direction of it.
As a result, the research methodology is as follows: the scope of the research focuses on broad and macro scales of mutual effects of urban morphology transformation projecting on the case of Cairo of New Cairo to highlight the physical and social effects among the two cities. Theoretical review is produced to understand the definitions, types, and different schools of thoughts of urban morphology with their case studies. Then, studying the components of urban form of a city, elements, and different models of city urban form to form a complete perspective about urban morphology on broader scales in order to be able to tackle the empirical part of Cairo and New Cairo. the objective of the theoretical part is to define the gap of knowledge regarding the mutual effects of urban morphology in the case of adjacent cities to be the kickoff of the empirical study.
The empirical part of the thesis understands and analyses the historical expansion of Cairo and its districts through time as well as the history of New Cairo expansion till recent times focusing on urban morphology of cities using physical survey techniques and research methods. After that, the mutual physical effects among the two cities are monitored and analyzed in both directions of Cairo and New Cairo to highlight the mutual urban morphological changes in the urban form and the outcomes of them on physical aspect. Then, a social survey of users of the two cities is performed to collect data about the users and their preferences and to test the satisfaction rates of the previously mentioned physical changes on different aspects as well as introduce, based on users feedback, recommendations to both urban designers experts and decision makers. Finally, the research concludes, discusses, and recommends action plan to consider the mutual effects of urban morphology among adjacent cities on different scales of knowledge and highlights future fields of research for further analysis.
