Abstract

Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) is a serious complication of liver cirrhosis (Ameer et al., 2022). SBP is a primary infection seen in patients with cirrhosis. Its incidence in cirrhotic patients varies between 10% and 30% per year (Rostkowska et al., 2018). The gold standard for the diagnosis of SBP is the neutrophil count in ascitic fluid defined by polymorph nuclear (PMN) count higher than 250cells /mm3. Manual measurement of PMN count is operator dependent which makes quality control difficult and delay the diagnosis . A delay in diagnosis and treatment exposes patients to a high risk of death Thus ,
Alternative methods for rapid diagnosis of SBP are an urgent requirement (Piano et al., 2016).
