Abstract

T
his study aimed to compare the efficacy of intravenous dexmedetomidine versus intraperitoneal bupivacaine-dexmedetomidine for postoperative analgesia after elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy under general anesthesia.
Patients were categorized into two groups; group A who received intravenous dexmedetomidine and group B who received intraperitoneal bupivacaine-dexmedetomidine.
The results showed no statistically significant difference between the two groups regarding VAS at 30 minutes, while there was high VAS score in group A compared to group B at 1,2,4,6,12 and 24 hours.
The time to first rescue analgesia and its dose were significantly decreased in group B in comparison to group A.
Both intravenous dexmedetomidine and intraperitoneal bupivacaine-dexmedetomidine were effective for postoperative pain control after laparoscopic cholecystectomy but the intraperitoneal route provided better pain control (less VAS) with a longer duration of analgesia and a lower postoperative analgesic consumption
