Abstract

Living with a pandemic for three and half years changes our ways of thinking. Through the lockdown, people tried to figure out a breath point and solution to deal with this crisis. These solutions highlighted the problems and the weak points in urban spaces after finishing the lockdown period, as well as the influence of COVID-19 on the social aspects. The lack of awareness about the importance of urban space roles was also another problem. Furthermore, the main aim of this study is to find a framework for livable places during pandemics through modifying the urban acupuncture theory.
This achievement comes from conducting questionnaires, observation, interviews, and the analyzing method of the traditional Chinese acupuncture theory. This is to investigate: how to define the effect of urban acupuncture theory on public space during the pandemic. Additionally, the reasons that let humans look for other spots and turn them into gathering places with some activities and services. Furthermore, the gaps in urban acupuncture theory are not stated yet. This study analyzes the human’s daily use of urban spaces and the role of pandemics in changing the functions of these spaces in cities. Revisiting the concept of urban acupuncture theory and its principles is a main part of this research to establish a framework for livable places.
This research’s main contribution is framing the theory and its definitions, goals, and principles that can help humans to interevent with the development of urban spaces to fulfill their needs. The interventions can contain some or all the stated principles. It is even possible that other principles will be added depending on the surrounding circumstances. The research results are a productive framework for livable places during pandemics after reformulating the theory to be more effective.
