Abstract

Mangroves are one of the blue carbon ecosystems that serve a crucial part in the storage of carbon in their biomass and sediments for a long time. Aside from their role in capturing carbon, they provide valuable environmental services such as water quality control and coastal protection. The present study aims to assess carbon sequestration capacity in the sediments of Wadi El Gemal and Hamata areas along the Red Sea coast of Egypt, in relation to Climate Change through the following objectives: (1) Determination of organic carbon in the sediments of mangroves. (2) Evaluation of Sediment organic carbon pool (SOCP). (3) Estimation of Carbon sequestration rate (CSR) and Carbon sequestration potential (CSP) of mangrove sediments. (4) Evaluating the mangrove distribution in the study area using GIS techniques.
