Abstract

Audit is an important part of everyday practice in health care
facilities to guarantee proper application of required level of care to
different patients.
Infection is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in
hemodialysis patients and one of the most important fields to be audited
regularly.
Despite that, most nurses show low level of adherence to infection
control practices leading to increased sepsis and mortality rate.
The current study conducted in 10 hemodialysis units in Menoufia
governorate including 420 nurses participating showed that most nurses
and subsequently most units had low levels of adherence regarding
different aspects of actions to be fulfilled in hemodialysis setting.
There was no statstically significant association between gender and
overall performance p value = 0.065. On the other hand, there was
statstically significant association between education, experience and
overall performance with p value = 0.037, 0.026 respectively.
Sepsis rate and mortality rate in audited hemodialysis units are lower
in most units achieving better adherence to infection control practices
compared to those with lower adherence.
