Abstract

Acute PE continues to be a potentially fatal condition even if the mortality rate associated with PE has decreased as a result of the quick diagnosis.
Bedside TTE has a key role in diagnosing suspected acute PE in patients with hemodynamic instability. In addition, TTE has a great role for early risk stratification of acute PE patients which has a great influence on the clinical decision-making in the ED.
This study aimed to assess the value of TTE for diagnosing acute PE and assessing the frequency of typical echocardiographic signs of RV dysfunction in acute PE.
This study included 50 patients admitted to the ED - Alexandria University Hospital with confirmed PE diagnosis by CTPA. The Inclusion Criteria were symptomatic patients with a diagnosis of PE (Thrombus in at least segmental pulmonary artery in CTPA). The Exclusion Criteria were patients with a known diagnosis of CTEPH and congenital heart disease.
A transthoracic echocardiography focused on the assessment of the right side dimension and function was done as soon as possible if PE was confirmed by CTPA. In patients with hemodynamic instability who had a high clinical probability of PE, bedside TTE was done before CTPA.
