Abstract

HCV is a serious and major cause of chronic liver disease globally. Egypt was thought to have a high HCV prevalence. But, recent screening program done by the ministry of health showed prevalence of only 4.5%.
Cirrhosis is a public health problem with high morbidity and morality. Globally It represents the 11th most common cause of death. Cirrhosis can be widely categorized into two distinct phases compensated and decompensated cirrhosis.
Compensated cirrhosis progresses into decompensated cirrhosis at rate of approximately 5-7% per year. Following decompensation, cirrhosis becomes a systemic condition characterised by various organ/system dysfunction.
It’s now well established that advanced cirrhosis is considered a chronic inflammatory condition evidenced by elevated blood levels of pro-inflammatory chemokines and cytokines. The main immunologic abnormalities including systemic inflammation and immunodeficiency that are present in cirrhosis are collectively named cirrhosis-associated immune dysfunction.
