Abstract

The effect of glaucoma surgery on corneal endothelium has been an area of interest for many studies. However, the withdrawal of the supraciliary implant Cypass following an evidence of continuous endothelial cell loss exceeding the FDA limits has brought the endothelial safety profile of glaucoma surgery into the center of attention, especially with the continuing introduction of minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries, a significant part of which are device including, into the market. The status of corneal endothelium can be studied by various methods. Clinical specular microscopy (SP) is the most commonly used technique in both clinical practice and research settings. However, it has its own inheritedlimitations, primarily sampling related issues within same devices and outcome variabilities across devices. Among SP outcome measures, corneal endothelial cell density (CECD) and its loss (ECL) are the most reliable corneal endothelial parameter (CEP) to assess and follow. Values of CEP and ECL following glaucoma surgery varies from the central cornea to peripheral cornea, which can be quite challenging to scan.
