Abstract

PREGNANT WOMEN
Background: Anemia and Premature rupture of membrane are common conditions encountered in pregnancy ,which have been known to impact each other to variable extents.
Objectives: to determine the incidence rate of premature rupture of membranes (PROM) in anemic and non-anemic pregnant women.
Methodology: This was a prospective cohort study carried out on 134 singleton pregnant women (67 singleton Anemic pregnant women and 57 singleton Non-Anemic pregnant women ), Attending the Gynecology and Obstetrics department at Fayoum University and Sennuris Hospitals, Complete blood picture test (CBC) was evaluated in all the pregnant women and confirmatory tests (nitrazine and ferning tests ) were evaluated in PROM cases. All the information regarding previous PROM and relevant pregnancy complication was determined in both groups and analyzed by statistical methods.
Results: Pregnant women with Anemia was at risk of Premature rupture of membranes three times greater than Non-Anemic pregnant.
Conclusion: The risk of Premature rupture of membrane is higher in the pregnant anemic women than the pregnant non-Anemic women. Therefore, women should be encouraged to begin antenatal care early after conception to allow adequate time for restoring iron stores.
