Abstract

Diabetic emergencies must be detected carefully and treated immediately. Hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia cause serious complications if not treated immediately. Because that school-aged children spend most of their day in school, teachers must be trained to deal with such emergency cases.
The present study aimed to assess knowledge, attitude, and practices of primary school teachers about diabetic emergencies. A descriptive cross-sectional research design was used in this study. This study was carried out in the primary schools at Assiut city. They numbered 70 primary schools, and a sample of 10 schools was taken from these schools. The total number of the sample included in the study was 400 teachers.
Data was collected by using five tools 1st tool includes personal data such as age, sex, marital status, residence, years of experience, history of diabetes, family history of diabetes, presence of diabetic students in class. 2nd tool included 9 item to assess the school facilities. 3rd It was included two parts was to elicit information about teachers’ knowledge regarding diabetes diabetic emergency. 4th was Likert scale which used to measure teachers’ attitude regarding diabetic emergency. It was consisting of three categories: agree, uncertain and disagree. 5th reported practice of studied teachers toward diabetic emergency.
The main results of the present study were:
• Nearly, 75% of studied teachers aged more than 40 years or equal, the mean age was (45.93±8.119) and ranged from 23 to 69 years.
• Female teachers represented 85.8%. The majority of them were married and urban residents.
• 50.5% of the studied teachers had poor knowledge regarding diabetic emergencies, while, 39.5% of them had fair knowledge. Also, 10.5% had good Knowledge regarding diabetic emergencies.
• 54% of the studied teachers had a positive attitude toward a diabetic emergency, while 46% had a negative attitude
• 53% of the studied teachers had satisfactory reported practice about diabetic emergencies while 47% reported unsatisfactory practice about diabetic emergencies.
• There was a statistically significant difference between the level of teachers ’ knowledge about diabetic emergencies and having a diabetic student, being diabetic teachers, and receiving training about diabetic emergencies (p-value = 0.022,0.010, and 0.027) respectively
• There was a statistically significant difference between the level of teachers ’ attitude about diabetic emergency and being diabetic teachers, and being male P value ≥ 0.05
• There was a statistically significant difference between the level of teachers ’ reported practice about diabetic emergency and having a diabetic student, being diabetic teachers, and receiving training about diabetic emergency (p-value = 0.022, <0.001, and <0.001) respectively
• There was weak a positive correlation between the diabetic emergency knowledge and attitude score toward diabetic emergencies among primary school teachers with significant (r =0.285, p <0.001)
• There was weak a positive correlation between the total knowledge score about diabetic emergency and practice score toward diabetic emergency among primary school teachers with significant (r =0.285, p<0.001)
