Abstract

Summary
Computers are an integral part of life and no longer need specialized training for use. In every sphere of life, the dependence on computers is ever increasing, and this widespread use has led to some important ”user” health concerns as neck pain which constitutes a major medical and socioeconomic problem.
It is one of the most common musculoskeletal complaints in industrialized countries, all workers who may spend too much time in a static posture facing their display as Information Technology employees at New assuit. It has been ranked the fourth leading cause of years lived with disability and limitation of movement and function in daily living activities.
The present study aimed to determine effect of educational program about isometric and stretching exercises on neck pain among IT employees at Assiut. Quize experimental research design was used in this study. The study was conducted in information technology Company (wasella) in smart village at new Assiut. The convenience sample was used in study. IT professionals both male and female who fulfilled the inclusion criteria were selected as sample. Total number of studied employees was 118 employees. The educational program was applied on 73 employees who had neck pain according to NPQ .
Data was collected by using two Tools; the first tool was structured self- administered questionnaire that was developed by the researcher which included five parts: the first part was included socio-demographic characteristics, the second part was used to assess employees’ medical history, the third part was assess employees ’nature of work, fourth part was used to assess employees’ knowledge about neck pain, correct posture, isometric and stretching exercises and the fifth part was used to assess
employees’ knowledge related practices by using the Northwick Park Neck Pain Questionnaire (NPQ): It was used to measures the neck pain and the consequent functional disabilities. It contains nine items, NPQ scores can be used to categorize pain: no neck pain (0-24%), mild (25-49%), moderate (50-74%), and severe (75-100%).
.Second tool: Observational checklist was used for assessing practicesof employees about isometric, stretching exercise and correct posture. It consists of (14) items. The scoring system was calculated according to the total score of 14. One (1) degree was given for each achieved item, and zero (0) was given for not achieved. It was classified as poor practice if the score was < 60%, fair if it was 60% to < 75%, and good practice if it was 75%.
Mechanism of data collection:
The researcher began collecting data from the middle of April 2021 to the end of May 2021 (6 weeks) for the pre-test (No=118). And continued on August 1st to implement the educational program on (No=73) until the end of August, 2021 (4 weeks), at end of session questionnaire taken to (20-25) minutes for immediate post-test. The researcher then followed up after three months from the end of November 2021 to the middle of December 2021 to assess employees’ knowledge, practices, level of neck pain and functional disability.
The main results of the present study revealed the following
More than two third (68.6%) of the studied employees had neck pain.
54.2%, 38.1% and 83.1% of studied employees were male, had <1-year experience and non-smoker. It was revealed that there was a significant statistical difference between level of neck pain &functional disability with gender, years of working experience and social score in pre-test & follow up (p<0.05). It was found that 87.7% of studied employees have poor
knowledge in pre- test while their knowledge improved in immediate post (98.6%). After three months for follow up their knowledge slightly declined ( 61.6 %). It shows that 86.3% of the studied employees had poor total practices scores in the pre-test, improved in the post-test and follow- up tests to 94.5% and 39.7% of them who had good practices respectively. There was negative correlation between total scores of practices with neck pain &functional disability in pre-test & follow up-test (r = - 0.366 and -0.560, - 0.266 respectively).
According these results, the study recommended that,.
* Periodically check up for all employees in the IT companies for early detection muscle skeletal disorders.
*Encourage IT companies to put brochures on the desk in front each employee as a reminder of correct posture and doing neck exercises.
