Abstract

Aim: The aim of this study was to assess how two commonly consumed acidic beverage solutions
(Coffee and Coca-Cola) affected the color stability and surface roughness of multi-color hybrid
ceramics after immersion and accelerated aging.
Methodology: A hybrid ceramic (Vita Enamic Multi-color) CAD/CAM blocks were used to create
a total of 21 specimens, each of which was 1.5 mm thick. Three subgroups (n=7) were examined in
accordance with the acidic immersion solutions (Coffee, Coca-Cola), and distilled water serving as
the control group. Before testing, specimens were kept in 20 ml of each solution at 37 °C for 28
days. Before and after 28 days of immersion and accelerated ageing, baseline color and surface
roughness measurements were taken with a spectrophotometer and a non-contact profilometer,
respectively.
Results: According to color measurements, immersion in coffee led to noticeably higher color
change values (ΔE) (10.21±0.29), followed by cola (3.13±0.18), while the lowest value was found
in Distilled water (1.06±0.10). While regarding surface roughness, Coffee immersed samples had
the greatest value (0.2137±0.0259), then followed by distilled water (0.2050±0.0228), while cola
had the lowest value (0.1633±0.0068). The correlation between color change and surface roughness
was a negative non-significant in coffee and distilled water groups, with P values of (0.52 and 0.11),
respectively. However, there was a positive non-significant correlation in Cola group(P=0.27).
Conclusions: Coffee immersion of multi color hybrid ceramics resulted in discoloration that was
above the clinically acceptable level and significantly increased the surface roughness. Immersion
in Coca-Cola resulted in an unnoticeable color change and significantly decreased surface
roughness.
