Abstract

Endoscope is playing a central role in the modernmultid isciplinary management of gastrointestinal diseases, endoscopy is essential to stratify patient at risk, controlactive hemorrhage, and prevent first as well as recurrent bleeding. (Abraldes etal., 2020)The purpose of the current study was to examine the effect of educational nursing intervention on nurse’s practice and selected patient’s outcomes among patients with upper gastrointestinal endoscop setting: The study was carried out at endoscopic unit of Liver Institute at Shebin EL Kom District, Menoufia Governorate. Subjects : A group of 25 nurses was examined two times (pre intervention, post intervention). Patients were divided into two equal groups; 50 for each group: Control group (I) of 50 patients was examined three times on (one day, one week and one month) and receive routine hospital nursing care. Study group (II) of 50 patients who were examined post educational intervention given for nurses to measure patient’s outcomes.Instruments of the study: Four instruments were carried out for data collection of the current study (instrument I & instrument II) for nurses and (instrument III &instrument IV) for patients. Instrument I: Structured interviewing questionnaire: -This instrument was developed by the researcher to assess sociodemographic of the nurses. It was comprised of two parts Part 1: socio demographic characteristics of the nurses: it was used to collect data about the following: age, gender, marital status, educational level, years of clinical experience and training courses in endoscopy. Part 2: knowledge assessment: it included questions to assess nurse’s knowledge before and after implementation of educational nursing interventio Instrument II: Structured observation checklist: This instrument was developed by the researcher to examine nurse’s practice for the care provided to patients undergoing gastrointestinal endoscope before, during and after endoscope. Instrument III: Structured interviewing questionnaire for patients: -This instrument was developed by researcher to assess biosociod emograph icdata for patients. It was divided into two parts as the following: - Part 1: Patients’ socio demographic data such as age, gender, marital status, occupation, level of education and monthly income. Part 2: Part two: Medical data: It included past and present medical historysuch as, previous hospitalization, previous surgery, chief complain and current medication used. Instrument IV: patient evaluation sheetIt was used to assess patients’ outcomes (knowledge and complications such asaspiration, bleeding, perforation, pain, infection and change of vital signs, discom fort and vomiting) that developed among patients admitted to upper endoscopy until patient discharging  The main findings of current study were: -There were highly statistically significant and clinically relevant improvement in nurses’ knowledge and practice regarding educational nursing intervention about care of patients with upper gastrointestinal endoscopy with improvement of patient’s out comes in the study group than control group Conclusions: Based on the findings of current study; it can be concluded that implementing nursing intervention to nurses for enhancing care of patients with upper gastrointest in alendoscopy had a positive effect and improvements in nurses’ knowledge and practice with a better achievement of patients’ outcomes. Recommendations: Endoscopic nurses should receive periodic training programs to improve,update, refreshing their knowledge and practice regarding
