Abstract

This study, the first part of which was concerned with potato tubers, which were grown in the experimental farm in El-Raheb area - Faculty of Agriculture - Menoufia University during the seasons 2020. As for the second part related to cucumbers, they were grown in the farm of the Faculty of Agriculture - Menoufia University - Shebin El-Kom during the agricultural season 2023. The aim of studying the effect of using organic fertilizers compared to using mineral fertilizers on some physical properties of potato tubers and cucumber fruits during storage at 4º.
The experiments were conducted on two varieties of potatoes, Diamond and Arizona. And for the fruits of the cucumber, the Galaxy variety was chosen. Two types of fertilizers were used in the cultivation of potato tubers and cucumbers, which are organic fertilizers and mineral fertilizers. They were divided into five treatments as follows for potatoes: Control (without fertilizers) (T1) - 100% mineral fertilizer (T2) - 50% mineral fertilizer and 50% organic fertilizer (T3) - 25% mineral fertilizer and 75% organic fertilizer (T4) - 100% organic fertilizer (T5).
It was divided into four treatments as follows for cucumber: Control (without fertilizers) (T1) - 100% mineral fertilizer (T2) - 50% mineral fertilizer and 50% organic fertilizer (T3) - 100% organic fertilizer (T5).
The organic fertilizer used for potatoes and cucumbers is a compost mixture of animal manure and plant residues. The mineral fertilizer for potatoes was ammonia nitrate at a concentration of 33% and for cucumbers, NPK at a ratio of 20: 20: 20.
Potatoes and cucumbers were stored in refrigerators at a temperature of 4ºC. The storage period for potatoes was 45 days, and for cucumbers it was 18 days.
The best fertilization treatment (50% organic 50% mineral) gave the best results in the physical characteristics of potato tubers. Where, the treatment of (75% organic 25% mineral)fertilization gave the highest values for the firmness of potato tubers. While, 100% organic fertilization treatment gave the best results in the physical characteristics of cucumber fruits, and the 100% mineral fertilization treatment gave the highest values for the firmness of cucumber fruits.
