Abstract

Respiratory tract infections (RTIs) among under-five children are a major public health problem. As it is a leading factor to high morbidity and mortality among under-five children worldwide. On the average under-five children suffer about 6-8 episodes of ARTIs per child per year, thus accounting for an estimated 238 million attacks and 13 million deaths every year, globally. Pneumonia and chronic bronchitis are the most common and prevalent complications of RTIs among children under- five children and they are responsible for high mortality rate among them. According to UNICEF, a child dies from pneumonia every 39 seconds. However, RTIs can be prevented through the following preventive measures as continuous hand washing for children and their mothers, cough etiquette, oral hygiene, immunization of children, health weaning practices, home ventilation, avoidance of kissing children from mouth, and proper feeding of children. So, compliance of rural mothers with preventive behaviors of RTIs is most effective and life saving for their under-five children.
