Abstract

Migraine is a neurological disorder which affects individuals throughout their lives and can cause limitations in daily activities. The underlying cause of migraine is thought to involve the release of certain vasoactive neuropeptides, including CGRP, substance P, nitric oxide (NO), vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), and PACAP that lead to inflammation and contribute to the onset of a migraine attack.
Our study aimed at studying correlation between serum CGRP level and obesity (BMI; waist circumference, serum leptin and insulin levels) in patients with recent chronic transformation.
The current study was conducted upon 40 subjects with migraine episodes (20 patients with episodic migraines and 20 patients with chronic migraine) visiting in Alexandria university hospital (El-Hadara Headache Clinic), and 20 subjects as control group.
All individuals were subjected to full history taking including sociodemographic data, detailed headache history, history of analgesic use, family history, medical history, history of trauma and comorbid psychiatric conditions. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were considered. MIDAS scores were assessed according to patients’ references.
Our study showed that by comparing episodic migraine patients and chronic migraine patients together with control studied groups.
▪ According to the gender, females dominance among the three groups, mean of episodic patients age group from 15 to 61 years old was (34.80 ± 11.33), the mean of chronic patients age group from 18.0 – 48.0 years old was (34.60 ± 8.23), while the mean of the control age group from 27.0 – 52.0 years old was (39.50 ± 7.39)and There was no statistical significance among the three studied groups regarding age (F = 1.841) (P = 0.168), also there was no statistical significant difference among the three studied groups regarding the weight (F =1.569) (P = 0.217)
▪ The body mass index was higher among chronic migraine patients, and this constituted a statistically significant disparity between the chronic migraine patients group
