Abstract

Aim: To evaluate Efficacy of sulfuric acid surface treatment of PEEK on the shear bond strength to
veneering composite compared to air abrasion.
Materials and Methods: Twenty disc-shaped PEEK samples measuring 10 mm diameter and 2
mm thickness were prepared from breCAM BioHPP blank. Samples were randomly divided into 2
groups; group A (n=10): bonding surfaces of the PEEK samples were etched with 98% sulfuric
acid, group B (n=10): bonding surfaces of PEEK samples were air-abraded with 110 μm Al2O3
particles. Visio-link primer was applied to all samples followed by Crea.lign veneering composite.
Each sample was tested for shear bond strength using universal testing machine at a crosshead
speed of 1.0 mm/min. Elemental analysis was done to detect sample’s change in composition.
Scanning electron microscope and Image J software (version 1.53) were used to measure surface
roughness. SEM was used to analyse the surfaces before surface treatment, after surface treatment
and after shear bond strength test.
Results: SBS for group A (sulfuric acid) was (11.72 ± 2.93 MPa) while it was (9.07 ± 1.63 MPa)
for group B (Al2O3). SR for group A was (22.95 ± 2 μm) while it was (30.26 ± 3.97 μm) for group
B. Statistical analysis showed that group A (sulfuric acid) had significant higher shear bond strength
than group B (Al2O3) (P < 0.05), despite that group B showed significant higher surface roughness
values than group A (P < 0.05).
Conclusion: 98% sulfuric acid is an effective PEEK surface treatment that enhances SBS compared
to Al2O3 air blasting.
