Abstract

his study is essentially centered on the transcreation of Netflix English synopses and epi-titles,
and their Arabic equivalents, from a pragmatic and socio-cultural adaptation approach, as well as
a socio-cognitive context viewpoint. The study addresses a number of questions: whether
transcreation is an aesthetic refined style of literary translation or a creative rendition of the source
text in which the source ideas are adapted into the target culture and language, what are the
strategies used by Netflix translators, the difficulties they face in the transcreation process, the
different roles assumed by the Netflix translators, the role of the socio-cognitive context in
transcreation, and the relationship between transcreation and cognitive linguistics, and finally how
can Volkova and Zubenina’s model be used to analyze the para-texts and their Arabic versions.
Sine little is known about transcreation in Translation Studies and the reality that Netflix is a
platform using transcreation as a translation method, the researcher aims to reach a solid
conceptualization of transcreation, in general and within Netflix, in particular. That is why, the
researcher employs a qualitative methodology by applying Volkova and Zubenina’s (2015) theory
of pragmatic and socio-cultural adaptation, as well as the socio-cognitive context tool. The corpus
selected for the analysis encompasses 28 English synopses and 31 epi-titles, as well as their Arabic
versions, during the period from 2016 to 2020. Therefore, the thesis leads to multiple findings
including that transcreation is part and parcel of adaptation, translators follow a combined
approach of creation and adaptation in the transcreation of synopses and titles, the transcreation
process of Netflix’s para-texts involves a socio-cognitive aspect, and transcreation is linked to
cognitive linguistics as translators manage the cognitive resources in their minds.
