Abstract

This thesis is concerned with studying the collision of structures during earthquake shocks. Make an assessment of structures hazards due to earthquake loads and calculate collusion forces of adjacent buildings due to earthquake shocks. This may leads to the collapse of buildings that leads to serious human and material losses and comparison with the requirements of global and local codes.
Make Fortran Program to calculate the seismic gap of the buildings under study and use the Excel program to find the mass and stiffness and use the ETABS program and compare the results. In the two models to reach the most accurate solution and calculating the seismic forces generated as a result of the collision during the earthquake through the ETABS program to reach the correct evaluation of these forces.
Then a parametric study is performed to find the impact of the collision in the following cases:
1. Two buildings of the same height, colliding slab with slab
2. Two buildings of the same height, colliding slab with columns
3. Two buildings with different heights, colliding slab with slab
4. Two buildings with different heights, colliding slab with column
Manual solution is considered inaccurate and gives excessive results in displacements, shear forces, or moments as a result of the calculations, because the solution is done for each element separately. Also, the way of combination is inaccurate by the square root of the sum of squares.
On the other hand, ETABS program gives more accurate results than our results . All element are integrated with each other and translate the forces and displacements between each other to give overall accurate results. Also, the Finite Elmet method translate the forces and displacement at each node between elements to make accurate overall reslts. In addition to combining by CQC method give more accurate results.
Several adjacent buildings were modeled to serve each case to calculate the collision forces between them through the ETABS program, and the effect of the seismic gap distance on the collision forces and the effect of the mass of buildings on these forces were studied.
