Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of self-disinfecting alginate that contain magnesium oxide on candidal growth, also evaluate tear strength fifteen completely edentulous male patients with no history of denture-wearing participated in this study. All the selected patients were re-habilitated by mucosa-supported complete dentures.
Swabs was taken from fifteen patients from maxillary arch before making impression. Also, received three impressions first impression made by (jaltrate- regular set- dentsply) and dis-infecting solution sodium hypochlorite, second with (jaltrate plus-ruglure set- densply) contain magnesium oxide and third receive an impression made by (jaltrate – dentsply) without dis-infecting and all taken impression poured to dental cast stone and swabs were taken after incubation period 24 hr. A germ tube test was done to identify the candida albicans from another candida species under a light microscope.
For evaluation of tear strength 10 specimens ware taken 5 specimens for each materials. Specimens were prepared according to ISO 21563:2013(E) molds was made with 102mm×19 mm with 4mm thickness of a specimens. The specimen was pulled in tensile machine with 500 mm/min speed using Lloyd instrument LR5K NEXYGENPlus Data Analysis Software.
One of the important variables about alginate tear strength is the powder/water ratio, in this study powder/water ratios were mix ratio 8g:19 ml water for both type of alginate according to ADA Specification 18.
The results of this study revealed statistically significant, less candida albicans growth on casts made from self-dis infecting alginate (jaltrate plus- dentsply-) contain magnesium oxide compared with conventional alginate (jaltrate – densply). Also, improving tear strength in self dis-infecting alginate when compared with conventional alginate.
