Abstract This study is in the scope of corpus-based cognitive linguistics. The usage-based approach of studying the current challenging corpus is fruitful because it is a hybrid of Colloquial Egyptian Arabic and very little Modern Standard Arabic peppered with English. The study carries out a detailed analysis of the cognitive structure, cognitive semantic motivations and the entrenchment level of Code-Switching in Egyptians’ Arabic and English digital written discourse represented by a selected Facebook group. Fillmore’s Frame Semantics theory, with its automated output corpus FrameNet, is used as a model and AntConc is used as a tool in analyzing the studied corpus. Both quantitative and qualitative methods are used in the lexical semantic and the grammatical analysis of the corpus. It is found that Arabic is the dominant language (mainly Egyptian colloquial Arabic) and English is the Embedded Language in all the studied corpus examples. 91 Lexical Units (LUs)/Code-Switching (CS) tokens, mostly in English, are categorized under 16 frames in the domains of academia and Technology. The higher frequency of the variant Arabic and Latin forms of the studied CS tokens and their different phrase types reflect their conventionality in such educational community. Both languages participate in the morphosyntactic constructions and word order of the CS words and their phrases. |
