Abstract

This study looked at how Ginkgo biloba leaves (GB) and Cassia tora seeds affected hypercholesterolemic rats lipid profiles for eight weeks. Thirty-six adult male rats were divided into two main groups. The first main group (six rats) was fed a standard diet and used as a (control -ve group). The second main group of 30 rats, fed on a high-cholesterol diet to induce hypercholesterolemia for 7 weeks, was then divided into five subgroups as follows: Subgroup (1) was fed a high-cholesterol diet and used as a positive control group. Subgroups (2 and 3) were given high-cholesterol diets and included supplements of (5 and 10%) Gb leaves powder, respectively. Subgroups (4 and 5) were given high-cholesterol diets and included supplements of 5% and 10% powder from C. tora seeds, respectively. According to the obtained findings, liver enzymes, kidney functions, and lipid profile were found to be significantly decreased (P≤0.05) while HDL-C was noticeably increased by Gb leaves or C. tora seeds at the tested levels as compared to the positive control group. Furthermore, significant increase of antioxidant enzymes (SOD and CAT) and a decrease in MDA were observed with Gb leaves or C. tora seeds supplementation at the tested levels in hypercholesterolemic rats. In conclusion, Gb leaves or C. tora seeds significantly reduced cholesterol and improving liver enzymes, kidney functions and antioxidant enzymes. Therefore, Ginkgo biloba leaves or C. tora seeds may be recommended for hypercholesterolemic patients.
