Abstract

In many power substations, we need to transfer Modbus
measurements like volts, currents, frequencies, and powers from the high or
medium voltage levels to the station level as IEC61850 standard. There are
some devices that support some protocols like Modbus, EtherCAT, IEC104,
etc which are not compatible with the IEC61850. So, we need to automate
and integrate the Modbus with the IEC61850 standard into one entity or
physical device to automatically send alarm points to the IEC61850 client
or Human Machine Interface (HMI). This occurred in case of a defect in
measurements by the Modbus slaves to manage the operation engineers who
work in the power substations monitor all the Modbus registers values into
the screens. This thesis discusses integrating a configuration tool for
physical devices with a run-time tool into a physical entity to perform
Modbus to Message Manufacturing Specification (MMS) mapping and
create the dedicated Intelligent Electronic Device (IED) configuration file.
Configuration Tool dispenses with creating the preconfigured mapping
associated file, device description file, and IED configuration file by an
external tool. This configuration tool facilitates the automation engineer to
configure the specific registers for any Modbus device without obligating
him to use all this device’s registers. The configuration tool facilitates the
automation engineer to map those Modbus registers to the IEC61850
standard, it eases for him to create the IED configuration file according to
the mapped points.
The Run-time tool dispenses with the database for achieving the
mapping between the Modbus and the IEC61850 after getting the Modbus
response to send the mapped IEC61850 to the HMI at the station level. This
tool uses the created IED configuration file that is created by the
configuration tool to create the model nodes for the IEC61850 and map the
Modbus data points to the model nodes then send the Modbus registers
values with the model node to the station level or HMI for the operation
engineer.
