Abstract
This thesis aimed at analyzing some selected newspaper articles related to Donald Trump’s announcement of the “the deal of the century”. A systemic functional grammar analysis is adopted to analyze the clauses of these articles through lexico-grammatical choices. The mechanisms are shown through the SFG, a linguistic approach associated with the analysis of clauses through lexico-grammatical choices in terms of structure (grammar) and words (lexis) (Halliday, 2014). Furthermore, the systemic functional grammar analysis focuses on analyzing transitivity and modality. A qualitative–descriptive approach is adopted to analyze articles through lexico-grammatical choices. The results of this analysis reveal that the ironical tendency of announcing the deal of the century is linguistically expressed through SFG domain, namely through lexico-grammatical choices. Transitivity and Modality identify the various opinions of the selected newspapers, through subject which is followed by the finite representing that most of the clauses are declarative clauses. Built on the experiential meaning of the data concerning Trump’s speech, the dominant majority of clauses, in each of the four online newspapers, falls into the material process of transitivity reflecting the paradoxical viewpoints taken by the west to change the course in the fields of economic, education, and security for the sake of the Palestinians and the actions performed by the west to end the wars and violence. Regarding modality analysis, it shows the degree of accepting or refusing the deal and how it requires attention via the detection of modality degrees.
